MS Dhoni’s request to trademark the term ‘Captain Cool’ – a nickname that has been closely linked to him due to his composed demeanor during matches – has been officially acknowledged and published by the Trademark Registry of India.
The trademark will be awarded if no objections or oppositions are presented by any third party within 120 days of its acceptance, which occurred on June 16, 2025. The trademark application was submitted under categories pertaining to sports training, coaching, and the offering of sports training facilities and services.
Backstory of MS Dhoni's trademark

Dhoni submitted his application in June 2023. At that time, the registry informed him that another entity, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited, had already secured the trademark ‘Captain Cool’. Consequently, Dhoni lodged a rectification petition regarding the mentioned mark, claiming that the company was attempting to exploit his brand and the popularity associated with the term.
In his application, Dhoni remarked: “This situation exemplifies a case of bad faith registration by the company, intended to mislead the public and unlawfully profit by capitalizing on the name of a prominent individual.” After a minimum of four hearings, Dhoni’s application was ultimately accepted.
The last time Dhoni was seen in action was during IPL 2025, where he assumed the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings midway through the season following an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Unfortunately, CSK faced a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of the standings for the first time in 16 seasons.
MS Dhoni gets induced in ICC Hall of Fame

Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. “It is a privilege to be recognized in the ICC Hall of Fame, which honors the contributions of cricketers from various generations and around the globe,” Dhoni stated. “Having my name remembered alongside such legendary figures is an incredible feeling. It is something I will treasure for a lifetime.” Dhoni, who will celebrate his 44th birthday this July, has left the door open for a potential return in another IPL season.
Former Indian captain Dhoni played a pivotal role in ending India’s drought in men’s ODI World Cups, four years after leading them to victory in the inaugural men’s T20 World Cup in 2007. He scored the decisive runs as India clinched the ODI World Cup in 2011, becoming the first team to secure the trophy on home ground.
Two years later, he guided India to the Champions Trophy title. Dhoni concluded his ODI career with an impressive average exceeding 50, having participated in 350 matches and amassed over 10,000 runs. In addition to his remarkable skill in run-chases, Dhoni will be remembered as the only captain to have won all three white-ball ICC trophies. Under his leadership, India also ascended to the pinnacle of the ICC Test rankings.
